The classic malted milk celebrated as a staple of the 1950s has been altered over the years to reflect changing tastes. Commonly known as a “malted,” it’s retained its thick and creamy texture and now bears the name of milkshake. Popular with kids and adults alike, the malted milk began its life in American history as infant formula.

Its creation is credited to pharmacist, James Horlick, who came to Racine, WI in 1873. He and his brother, William, patented the formula and trademarked “malted milk” in 1887 as a drink for infants and invalids. It became an indispensable staple of explorers. It was lightweight, highly portable, nourishing, and non-perishable. The British Indian Army took it with them into battle during World War I.

The explorer, Admiral Richard E. Byrd, took it with him during his explorations and named a mountain range after Horlick. When he returned to his native England, Horlick was made a baronet in honor of his accomplishment.

Historians credit the invention of the blender as a defining moment in the evolution of the malted milk. The appliance allowed a variety of ingredients to be combined together without the exhausting work of hand mixing. It’s said that Walgreen employee, Ivar “Pop” Coulson, first mixed ice cream into the blend when he ran short of another ingredient, thus creating the first malted milk in 1922 Chicago.

The heyday of the malted milk was the 1950s and the sweet beverage could be found at every diner, burger joint, and pharmacy lunch counter. Much of the confusion about the drink comes from the diversity of the U.S. lexicon. It was known as a malted milk, milkshake or shake depending on the region. Concrete was a shake so thick it wouldn’t drip even if it was held upside down.

Malted milk has diverged substantially from its roots as Horlick’s dry infant formula. The malted milk is commonly called a milkshake, but it still evokes a nostalgia associated with the 1950s, poodle skirts, and soda shops. Today’s malted milks often harken back to their even earlier roots when they were hand-shaken and whiskey was a predominant ingredient. At one point, the CIA even attempted to weaponize the delicious drinks.

Legend has it that the very first ice cream sandwich was created at the turn of the 20th century, by a pushcart vendor in the Bowery neighborhood of New York. The unknown hero of the frozen dessert world bravely went were no ice cream seller had gone before and sandwiched a slice of ice cream between two milk biscuits and sold his creation to hungry customers for just a penny. The idea soon caught on, and more vendors started selling the tasty biscuit and ice cream combo, and the ice cream sandwich was well and truly born.

Spring forward a couple of decades and the ice cream sandwich has a subtle reinvention in 1945, as a man named Jerry Newberg adds a new twist to the popular icy delight. He made his money selling slices of vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate wafers to hungry sports fans at Forbes Field, former home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. So popular was his new take on the original Bowery invention, it went on to by mass produced and became the Ice Cream Sandwich we know and love today.

Today Ice cream sandwiches can be found all around the world and are known by a variety of different names including the Monaco Bar, Giant Sandwich, Maxibon, Cream Between, Vanilla Slice and many more. However far you go to find one though, you can rest assured that the ice cream sandwich will always be considered an American icon. In fact, so much so, that it is even sold at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C!

Still one of the bestselling ice cream products on the market today, it is the 30 – 45-year age group that consumes the most ice cream sandwiches here in America. They must be eating a lot of them too, as the average number of ice cream sandwiches eaten per second nationally is a whopping 48, according to fact-finding website www.mobile-cuisine.com – and that’s a lot of sandwiches!

Upscale Ice Cream Sandwiches

As with all simple and traditional treats, there is always someone out there looking to improve on the original recipe. The ice cream sandwich is no exception, and upscale ice creameries and designer dessert chefs are using everything from banana bread to macaroons as the cookie base to sandwich ice creams made of a million different flavors to create an unusual and inspired take on the classic ice cream sandwich of our youth.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day

If you love an ice cream sandwich, why not celebrate National Ice Cream Sandwich Day on August 2nd, and eat a frozen treat in honor of the same. Or, if you can’t wait until August, come see us any time of year to try one of our new and exciting nitrogen ice cream sandwiches right here in Florida.

Here in America, we have a bona fide obsession with everything ice cream. This is nothing new though, and since the turn of the century, we have been enjoying the icy delights in a variety of different guises.

If you can imagine a time when you were not able to pick up an endless array of flavors at your local store, your fellow Americans took a trip to ice cream parlors and soda fountains that could be found up and down the land. As the social hub of many small towns and a great place for first dates, family treats, and special occasions, the ice cream parlor has also held a special place at the heart of every community.

These days, you can get your ice cream fix at the market, from a street vendor, at the movies, at the game and pretty much anywhere else you can think of too. But nothing makes it feel more special than picking out your favorite flavor, selecting your toppings and chowing down at a table as a special treat.

At the height of their popularity, ice cream parlors were gaudy and glitzy, offering everything from ice cream to pastries and in some cases even oysters too. Considered a great place to head out for family gatherings, hang out after school or someone to take your date, mid-century ice cream parlors became an institution all of their own. Giant ice cream cones or soda fountains invited diners from near and far to drive on up and find a seat to enjoy super tasty flavors and vintage charm.

In the 1950’s, lining up for malted shakes, ice cream floats, and simple sundaes was an absolute delight. These days, our ice cream parlor may give you more choice, but the simple values of the American ice cream dream still prevail. Here in our steampunk themed cafe, you can still look forward to treating yourself to something extra creamy and utterly delicious.

Frostbite is not just about innovative ice cream and unusual desserts, freshly frozen for your pleasure, it is also about creating a relaxed atmosphere for all of our visitors to enjoy. We want our modern-day ice cream parlor to give you the same warm, fuzzy feelings that were found in days of old, and our friendly staff work hard to give you that.

The technology behind our ice cream may be cutting edge, but our values are as traditional as apple pie. We have worked hard to create an atmosphere like nowhere else and we welcome you to join us here. We have created unique interiors where there is always plenty of fresh flavors and delicious desserts on offer, great music in the background and a very warm welcome.

Our trendy dessert hot spot is the perfect place to enjoy modern day ice cream served up with a traditional smile.

Can’t get to us? No problem

In keeping with the convenience of modern day living, we can even deliver our delicious desserts to you if you can’t make it to us – Uber Eats, Doordash and Postmates will all deliver our treats to your very own home, so you can create your own ice cream parlor in the comfort of your living room.
