As with all great inventions, the waffle cone is surrounded by controversy. If science is correct, the essence of the waffle cone began in the Neolithic period as a prototype cake that was often used as a portable holder for everything from meat to vegetables. Throughout history, it was made in different sizes and from various ingredients, but it retained its crisscross pattern throughout.

Fast forward to the 1904 World’s Fair where a Syrian concessionaire named Ernest Hamwi was making pastries, one of which was zalabia. He was positioned next to an ice cream vendor who ran out of glass cups to sell his frozen ices and the two collaborated, selling the ices in the deep-fried treats.

However, in 1903 Hoboken resident, Italo Marchiony, was a street vendor selling lemon ices on Wall Street. The ices were sold in glass cups that were supposed to be returned to the vendor, but the busy Wall Street traders typically walked away with the cups and never returned them. The loss of the cups was cutting into Marchiony’s profits.

The solution was an edible cup. He’d been working on a device to make ice cream cones since 1896. Marchiony filed for a patent in 1902 and it was granted in 1903. His waffle cones were a hit everywhere they were sold.

According to the Hoboken Historical Museum, Hamwi was an exhibitor at the World’s Fair and he was making zalabis when Marchiony asked Hamwi to roll some of the zalibis so he could use them as cones for his ice cream. According to the Museum, Marchiony was also responsible for the first ice cream sandwiches.

Today, people can choose from cake cones, sugar cones and waffle cones. It’s said that the type of cone a person chooses is an indicator of their personality. Waffle cone fans will be happy to know that they’re fun, enthusiastic, independent, and enjoy the finer things in life.

Ice cream sauces come in flavors that would amaze ice cream aficionados of even a decade ago. The sauces have evolved from traditional favorites to gourmet concoctions that even include edible gold. Whether the individual is a traditionalist or an adventurer, sauces encompass something to please the palate of the most discerning ice cream lover.

Ice cream sauces can be served cold or warm and for traditionalists, old favorites are the best. For them, nothing is better than ice cream with a generous drizzling of chocolate fudge, caramel or butterscotch. Also popular are fruit-flavored sauces of strawberry, raspberry or cherry.

Sauces are an easy way to “dress up” plain vanilla and they add pizazz to other ice cream flavors for a unique taste sensation. Traditionalists with an adventurist streak can embellish their ice cream with marshmallow, peanut butter or maple sauce to transform the simple dessert into a special treat.

People like to play with flavors and it doesn’t require a confirmed foodie to appreciate the savory boost that alcohol and spices can give to ice cream. A variety of liqueurs are being utilized with fruits to add either color or flavor to ice cream. Blackberry and brandy sauce combines the zest of brandy with fresh blackberries.

Campari liqueur provides color and is an excellent choice for those that aren’t a fan of overly sweet desserts. Coffee liqueur is a tasty treat for anyone that likes ice cream and a quick pick-me-up. Rum, whiskey, and wine have also entered the arena of specialty toppings, along with Irish cream, vodka and tequila.

The mixology of ice cream sauces doesn’t end there. While it may seem a contradiction of flavors, sweet and hot chili sauce has found their way into ice cream toppings, along with cinnamon, ginger, green tea, and pumpkin seeds. Flowers such as geranium, lavender and dianthus are being added, along with household spices that include thyme, basil, and rosemary.

There’s no end to the possible combinations for ice cream sauces and there’s one sure to please even the most educated palate. Traditionalists don’t need to worry, though. Hot fudge, caramel, marshmallow, butterscotch, and strawberry are still the all-time favorites.

Toppings for ice cream are almost as popular as the frozen treat itself. Frostbite Nitrogen has long understood the love affair that people have with toppings and offers ice cream flavors and toppings that can be utilized to create over 3 billion combinations, enabling anyone to create their very own ice cream masterpiece.

Ice cream is delicious by itself and the array of toppings encompass much more than tiny traditional candy sprinkles to accommodate a wide range of tastes. Anyone can create a unique masterpiece of intertwining, mouthwatering flavors and the range of available toppings can be mind-boggling.

Chocolate

One of the all-time favorite toppings for ice cream is chocolate, whether it’s in the form of hot fudge, chocolate sauce or chocolate syrup that hardens on contact. The rich, buttery taste of caramel is a popular alternative, along with strawberry syrup – and don’t forget the whipped cream.

Candy

Candy has been a popular topping for many years but was limited to traditional sprinkles. Today’s connoisseurs of ice cream toppings can choose from chocolate or white cholate chips, peanut butter cups, Kit Kat candy and gummy bears. Marshmallows also fall within that category.

Cake & Cookie Crumbles

A relatively new addition to the growing menu of toppings encompasses cookie and cake crumbles. Oreo brand cookies top the list, followed by small bits of cookie dough, brownies and cheesecake, along with graham cracker crumbles.

Nuts

At one time, nuts were a standard ice cream topping and they’re still popular with many individuals, but they’ve been joined by other ingredients for their crunchy or chewy qualities. Almonds, pecans, and peanuts are the preferred nut toppings, followed by granola, coconut flakes, and amaretto chips. Many types of cereals have entered the arena of available toppings including Captain Crunch, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and Fruity Pebbles.

Fruit

In last place in terms of popularity for ice cream toppings is fresh fruit. When the fruit contains natural juices it can create some unique and unusual flavors. The most popular fruits for topping are strawberry, banana, pineapple and blueberry, though raspberries and coconut are gaining traction.

With so many available selections, the only problem ice cream fans now have is which toppings to choose. With over 3 billion possible combinations of ice cream flavors and toppings, anyone can create their own unique customized masterpiece and never eat the same thing twice.

In an era of supersized foods and beverages designed for a single person, many people are turning to vintage themes of ‘ice cream for 2’ to impress a date or relive the days of their youth. A resurgence of interest in everything vintage has been the impetus for bringing back ice cream favorites that encourage sharing.

Ice cream for 2 used to be a standard feature in corner malt shops and soda fountains that were favorite hangouts for the high school crowd. Individuals would take their dates to the ice cream shop to be seen and share social time. Ice cream for 2 became a way to create a more intimate atmosphere between two people as well as make a declaration that they were a couple.

Served in large glasses, ice cream sodas hold the top place for vintage ice cream beverage that’s perfect for sharing. Made with ice cream and either carbonated water or soda – depending on which part of the country you’re in – simply add two straws and a couple has a tasty treat for date time fun.

Whether they’re called a ‘malted’ or a milkshake, they’re high on the list of old-time favorites for sharing. Served in a large glass, the thick, creamy creations melt slowly, making them an ideal treat for sharing over conversation. Technically speaking, a malted is made with malted milk powder that gives it a slightly nutty flavor while milkshakes contain soft ice cream or yogurt, but the lines have been significantly blurred between the two over the years.

Served in a fancy dish rather than a glass, ice cream sundaes offer multiple flavor combinations from which to choose and share. Covered in syrup, nuts, whipped cream and garnished with a cherry, the treat was created to circumvent Blue Laws that made it illegal to sell soda on Sunday, one of the prime ingredients in ice cream sodas.

Last but not least is the banana split, a favorite since its invention in 1904. It was considered a variation of the sundae and has since established itself as a stand-alone ice cream dessert. The banana split is covered in nuts, whipped cream, syrup and fruit likes its sundae cousin, but the addition of a split banana was a game changer. It was invented on a Sunday, but the spelling was changed to appease local church officials.

Today, vintage-style ice cream shops are springing up in unexpected places and featuring ice cream for 2 specialties that are reminiscent of a by-gone era. Many established ice cream shops are now offering special sizes and bringing back the unique ambiance of a soda shop. The ice cream parlors make a perfect option for a memorable date experience and they’re equally desirable for those that want to return to a cherished time from their teens.

Vegan ice cream is made without using any animal products at all. The ice cream base takes its flavor and consistency from milk alternatives like coconut milk, soy, and almond milk instead.

How Do We Make Non-Dairy Vegan Nitrogen Ice Cream?

We’re not going to lie to you, making nitrogen ice cream using plant-based ingredients instead of dairy can often lead to major ice crystallization. This, in turn, can lead to a lumpy or coarse texture, which literally kills off that wonderful creamy consistency we love so much.

Here at Frostbite, our dedication to the cause led us to keep trying until we found the perfect blend of ingredients to ensure that our non-diary vegan ice cream treats remain just as smooth, creamy and utterly delicious as our regular, diary-laden version.

To get the ingredients just right, we swapped out everyday cows milk for the rich, delicious taste of coconut milk. Not only is this a totally non-diary, vegan-friendly option, but coconut milk also leaves the ice cream tasting surprisingly sweet and creamy without the addition of extra sugars.

Our coconut milk base if just right for adding a huge variety of flavors, toppings and mix-ins, before blasting them with our famous liquid nitrogen and stirring it up to produce the creamiest, best tasting non-diary vegan ice cream you have ever tasted.

Why Everyone Should Try Our Non-Diary Vegan Ice Cream?

If you are lactose intolerant or have specific diary-free dietary requirements, our non-diary ice cream is the perfect choice for you. Of course, if you enjoy a vegan diet, it is the perfect nitrogen ice cream base for you to enjoy too.

But, even if you have no specific reason to switch to a plant-based diet just now, we are pretty sure you will still be super impressed with our non-diary, vegan nitrogen ice cream, here in Florida.

Which Flavors Work Best with Non-Diary, Vegan Ice Cream?

This one is easy – all of them, they all do! Depending on your own preference, you can add the mix-ins you like best to make your favorite flavor using our creamy, coconut base. Ice cream. Easy!

The Best Non-Diary, Vegan Ice Cream in All of Florida

Here at Frostbite, we appreciate how hard it can be to create frozen desserts using a suitable alternative to whole milk or heavy cream bases. We also understand the clever science behind it all, like the fact that the higher the density of fat in the base you use, the fluffier the finished product will be.

Coconut milk is plant-based, but it is also high in fat with a thick viscosity that is similar to heavy cream. However, coconut cream can have an unpleasant aftertaste if not balanced correctly, so we always ensure that our base if beautifully mixed.

Try it, you might just be pleasantly surprised with our non-diary, vegan ice cream that is smooth, sweet and oh so creamy and holds together well when scooped, just like traditional dairy treats do.

Chocolate, strawberry or vanilla – what’s your favorite flavor? Although these three classics are some of the most popular taste sensations that we get asked for, there is a world of unusual and sometimes bizarre flavors that also have a place in the hearts of hardcore ice cream enthusiasts. Here at Frostbite, we can whip up over a million different flavor combinations to suit your mood, but further afield there are even crazier flavors to be consumed. Here are some of the most bizarre ones we have ever heard of in America today:

Chocolate Chili Cookie Dough

Mixing chocolate with chili is not that unusual, but if you add that to ice cream you create something entirely new. An Indian restaurant in New York is doing just that to add a spicy bite to complement the rich smooth taste of bitter chocolate ice cream. Throw in some cookie dough and you get extra gooey deliciousness in every bite.

Swiss Cheese Ice Cream

Love cheese? Love ice cream? Then this could be the perfect combination for you. Using Swiss cheese as a base for this creamy dessert creates a savory, salty, cheesy flavor that works well with chopped nuts, roasted hazelnuts and even butterscotch sauce.

Japanese Black Ice Cream

Somewhere in Omaha, a team of highly creative creamists have really pushed the boat out with black ice cream made using the finest of Japanese squid ink! With a slightly fishy aftertaste, this darkest of ice creams is strictly for adventurous enthusiasts only.

Broccoli Ice Cream

This brightly colored green ice cream is a great way to get your daily dose of veggies, while still enjoying a rich and creamy ice cream treat. Using organic broccoli florets to make this flavorful gelato, a New York ice creamery has made a way of making eating your greens a great deal more palatable.

Cucumber and pickle

This creation is not as out there as it may at first seem. Sorbet and ice cream have long been used to cleanse the pallet between courses, and this unique combination is actually used by a dumpling shop in New York to allow diners to fully enjoy all of their savory concoctions. Cucumbers and dill pickles make for an unusual, yet not unpleasant taste that wakes up your taste buds ready for whatever comes next.

Ghost Pepper Ice Cream

Not one for the faint-hearted, this seriously spicy ice cream can be found in Delaware. Richly red in color, this fully flavored ice is made using the world hottest pepper, and diners are asked to sign a waiver before tucking in as it is just as hot in its frozen form as it is plucked straight out of the ground. Ouch!

Shellfish Ice Cream

Somewhere out in Maine, diners can enjoy a tasty, fish-filled treat in the form of shellfish ice cream. Chock full of crustacean goodness, the shellfish are cooked, pickled and buttered before being added to vanilla ice cream for a fabulously fishy treat.

Strawberry balsamic with black pepper

In Portland, they love the sweet, juicy taste of freshly picked strawberries, combined with the spicy taste of black pepper. Weirdly, the sweet and savory flavors combine beautifully, to create unusual and uniquely Moorish ice cream.

Pizza Ice Cream

Dessert trailblazers in Philadelphia have created an ice cream featuring all the flavors we associate with pizza, including tomato, oregano, basil, salt and garlic. For real pizza enthusiasts, the shop owners recommend eating the ice cream on a bed of pizza, to really get a full on hot and cold flavor sensation.

Bacon Ice Cream

We kid you not. Ice cream parlors up and down the country are routinely serving up frozen treats laced with bacon and maple syrup to those who love sweet and savory flavors all in one mouthful. Try it if you can, you may well be pleasantly surprised.

We all know the familiar sounds of the ice cream truck. Even now, as sensible and mature adults, it’s hard to overcome the urge to drop what you’re doing and run out to the truck, overflowing with excitement about which great flavor we should try today.

But did you ever wonder about the history of the phenomenon that has been drawing children (and giant, adult children) towards it for generations?

I’m gonna tell you anyway, so grab a cone and settle down for some history…

Back in the 19th Century, when the majority of city dwellers lived in poverty and filth, ice cream carts became a big thing. You may have seen photos of them or noticed them in films set in the era. However, you can remove any romantic notions you may have about them, as they were little more than mobile germ factories!

Back then, if you were in the mood for some ice cream, you’d visit one of these carts, manned by some unwashed kid and buy a plate of ice cream. You would then lick the plate clean and return it to the kid before heading off to be violently ill. You see, the plate you just handed back would be wiped ‘clean’ and be ready for the next guy. The trouble was that until the 1890s, milk in the US wasn’t pasteurized, which meant that any dairy product was a gamble. Many “ice cream epidemics” flared up around that time as a result of this.

By 1904, things had massively improved, especially in the ice cream hygiene world, and ice cream was back in favor. At the 1904 World Fair, some bright spark came up with the novel idea of scooping ice cream into a wafer cone, thus providing the ideal ice cream transportation device. The idea took off and seems to have lasted.

In the 1920s, a man called Harry Burt of Youngstown, Ohio came up with a great idea. He stuck a refrigerator into his truck, loaded it with chocolate covered ice creams and set off to deliver low cost the treats to Depression-hit families across the region.

The idea spread across the nation and, soon, ice cream trucks prowled neighborhoods all over the place. World War II and the associated sugar rationing nearly killed off ice cream trucks for good but, in Post-War America, things soon bounced back.

Today, ice cream trucks still ply their trade to us all, cruising along slowly, playing out a song that promises a few moments of happiness along with delicious memories of a happier time in our lives.

The exact moment the sundae was invented is a hotly-contested matter, but the most popular consensus is that once upon a time in an ice cream parlor in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, an owner was asked by a customer to pour chocolate syrup over his ice cream, thus inventing the sundae.

Although there are many other towns across the country that dispute this fact and claim that the humble sundae was invented elsewhere, the only thing that really matters is that it was indeed invented at all.

Ice cream parlors were an instant hit in the early days of the United States. First appearing in Paris, France, in the 17th Century, having been brought there by Italian immigrants, it soon spread across Europe and, eventually, to the New World. Us Americans were hooked right away with the vibrant colors and fascinating flavors, as well as all the candy and sodas available, and it wasn’t very long before the ice cream parlor became a staple treat for most American families.

By the time the sundae had made its mark, ice cream was available just about anywhere including drugstores, diners and restaurants. This was thanks largely to the availability of ice cream making machines. The machines had been about since the mid-19th Century but it wasn’t until they became powered that things really took off. Now, stores could knock up their own fresh batches of ice cream as well as experiment with flavors and dishes. This boosted sales no end. After all, every town has a kid in it and every kid loves ice cream!

For over two hundred years, ice creams, and the ice cream sundae have been putting smiles on our faces both as kids and adults, and it remains to this day one of the most popular desserts ever made.

What makes the ultimate ice cream sundae?

Well, like most simple but effective dishes, the sundae has a host of variations and ways of doing things. However, throw together any combination of fresh fruit, quality ice cream, chopped nuts and, of course, chocolate syrup, all served in a long dish with whipped cream and some cherries on the top, and you can’t really go wrong.

If you’ve ever wondered why it’s called a sundae and not a Sunday, you’re not alone. As with all great things, the origins are shrouded in myth and legend. Well, maybe that’s a little bit dramatic but nobody seems to know for sure. One of the popular answers is that the contested inventor, the guy we mentioned at the start, only ever sold the dish on a Sunday. This would soon become known as ‘Ice Cream Sunday’ in households all across Two Rivers, Wisconsin, and, one assumes, the store owner picked up on that and ran with it. As for the spelling; well, that is a mystery!

Here at Frostbite, we are passionate about ice cream – making it, tasting it and sharing it with all of our lovely customers like you. We are also a bit geeky about the whole thing too. From the scientific know-how needed to create creamy and comforting nitrogen desserts to learning about the history behind some of our country’s favorite sweet treats.

From apple pie to chocolate brownies, America has a long-lasting love affair with all things sweet, and the humble banana split has always been a favorite. In case you have ever wondered about the origins of this delicious fruity, creamy and thoroughly fabulous dish, here is our look at one of the most classic desserts in history.

From humble beginnings…

In 1892, Chester Platt, a druggist in the university town of Ithaca, New York, stuck a cherry on top of a dessert and called it a Sunday, after the day he created it on. Just a few short years, and one name change later (Platt renamed his concoction a “sundae” to appease church representatives), and every ice cream parlor and drug store in the country was selling these popular iced desserts.

One such man was David “Doc” Strickler, an apprentice pharmacist at Tassell’s Pharmacy in Pittsburgh. According to local legend, Stickler was approached by a young customer who challenged him to make something “different.” Among the ingredients before him was the banana, and he promptly cut the fruit in two and added ice cream, sprinkles and a cherry to create the world’s first official “banana split”.

Always Time for A Treat

During the depression years, families were rarely able to enjoy the finer things in life like a meal out together. What they did do, however, was go out for dessert, leading to an explosion in ice cream parlors and dessert houses across the USA. As Americans fell further in love with all things sugary, the Banana Split also grew in popularity. By combing a relatively exotic fruit, ice cream, fresh cream, and a cherry, purveyors of fine desserts created a sweet treat that was perfect for all the family.

Over the years the appeal of the banana split began to fade a little as ice creams became available in a huge variety of flavors, with a wide array of toppings and extras. But, here in 2018 the Banana Sundae once again stands tall, as this retro dessert is back on the menu with a bang!

What Makes A Great Banana Split?

If you want a really good, traditional style banana split, there are a few ingredients you will need. First, find yourself a glass boat shaped bowl and add plenty of chocolate sauce at the bottom. Next pop in a scoop of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream to form the base, then cut the banana in half and place on either side of the boat bowl.

This is your basic banana split, but it needs a little something extra. Open a tin of pineapple chunks and add a few over the top of the ice cream, along with some more chocolate sauce. Once they are nicely settled, it’s time to whip out the whipped cream. Spray in small circles over each scoop of ice cream, until you have a veritable mountain of loveliness in front of you. Finally, sprinkle finely diced nuts and sprinkles, add a cherry and you are good to go!
