Neapolitan ice cream – that delicious blend of strawberry, vanilla and chocolate – has an international ring to the name and its true origins are still debated. Neapolitan was the moniker given to the combined ice cream flavors in honor of its supposed Italian origins.

The first known recipe for a three-flavored ice cream comes from the head chef of the Royal Prussian household in 1839. The first Neapolitan ice cream from Italy contained pistachio (green), strawberry (red) and vanilla (white) in honor of the Italian flag.

When the dessert moved to the U.S., chocolate was substituted for pistachio as it was one of the “big three” flavors most popular throughout the nation. Neapolitan was the first to combine three flavors in a single package and was introduced to U.S. ice cream fans in the 19th century.

In some areas of the world, it’s known as harlequin ice cream, more closely resembles gelato, and may combine ice cream with layers of fruit and other sweets. In 1885, specific “rules” for the cutting of Neapolitan ice cream were laid out. It was to be served thinly sliced so each person received a portion of each flavor. In other locales, it could include cake or brandy-flavored bread served between the layers of ice cream.

In the early 19th century, the sale of ice cream as a favored dessert began to decline in Europe. In an effort to bolster sales, European ice cream makers introduced spumoni to the U.S. in the 1870s and it quickly morphed into the strawberry, chocolate and vanilla that’s known today.

Frostbite Nitrogen is continuing that spirit of innovation with ice cream infused with nitrogen or alcohol, light bulb smoothies, dragon breath snacks, and billionaire-golden Oreo ice cream sandwiches. The steampunk-themed ice cream shop offers an array of toppings for over 3 billion combinations no matter what flavor is your favorite.

Frostbite Nitrogen believes ice cream and everything associated with it should be fun. That philosophy is behind the company’s Dragon’s Breath snack. The company’s Japanese cereal puffs are infused with liquid nitrogen. When they’re chewed, the nitrogen interacts with a person’s warm breath to create a fog that’s expelled through the nose and mouth, giving the impression of blowing smoke like a dragon.

It’s a perfect opportunity for a selfie and the snacks are popular with dragon fans, along with the young at heart. The frozen dessert consists of ordinary, fruit-flavored cereal puffs, but when they’re dipped in liquid nitrogen they transform into a unique snack experience.

As with any unique creation, controversy exists over where the novelty treat first appeared. Some claim it was first served in Los Angeles, CA and spread to locales encompassing Korea, the Philippines and Taiwan. Others are equally sure that it originated in the Philippines or South Korea before gaining popularity in the U.S.

Liquid nitrogen has no taste and the flavor of the cereal puffs is similar to that of popular brands of fruity cereal. Dragon’s Breath can be eaten as it is, but some people like to dip the nuggets in a flavored sauce such as chocolate or strawberry for an added flavor burst.

Consumers can now have their cocktail and eat it too, with Frostbite Nitrogen’s alcohol-infused ice cream. The savory treat is available in nine popular cocktail flavors including Mango Margarita, Pina Colada, Strawberry Cheesecake Daiquiri, and Frisky Whiskey.

Dragon’s Breath is the latest in a long list of novelty desserts. Creative connoisseurs have been developing new taste sensations for decades – both deliberately and accidentally. Even cotton candy was a novelty creation at one time, but nowhere have people been more innovative than with ice cream. There’s even a glow-in-the-dark ice cream that uses liquid nitrogen that’s UV-reactive.

Frostbite Nitrogen is South Florida’s first ever steampunk nitrogen ice cream factory. Featuring steampunk-themed décor, Dragon’s Breath, cocktail-flavored ice cream, nitrogen-infused ice cream, and on-site flash-frozen ice cream, it’s one of the coolest places in all of South Florida.

Ice cream is good! No matter what your favorite flavor is, or the type of ice cream you prefer, there is always a great reason to enjoy a frozen dessert. To make regular ice cream you simply take some milk and/or cream, add some sugar and sometimes eggs and churn it all up while freezing it.

Add your flavorings, bits of fruit/chocolate/bacon (it’s a thing – look it up!) and very soon it will be ready to get stuck in to. There are also many variants on this traditional recipe, known as hard ice cream, and here are some of those for you:

Soft ice cream. This is usually served in cones from restaurants and ice cream trucks. The mixture is more or less the same as the hard ice cream, but it’s mixed at a higher temperature and stored in the machine in a liquid state. It then starts to freeze as it’s added to the cone, giving it that creamy, light texture.

This is made with more milk than cream, which reduces the amount of air in the mixture and results in a denser ice cream that has more intense flavors.

French Ice Cream. This is made using a custard base and is available in a variety of flavors.

Nitrogen ice cream. This is made using magic and sorcery and is very smooth and delicious.

Nitrogen Makes for Creamier Ice Cream

One of the first things people notice when they try nitrogen ice cream for the first time is just how smooth and velvety it is. The reason for this relies on science. Traditional ice cream preparation methods take a little while to freeze the ingredients whereas nitrogen freezes at a much faster rate. Because of this, the ice crystals in nitrogen ice cream are much, much smaller, which gives it that smooth texture. The traditional way of doing it takes longer, allowing the crystals to form much larger, giving it that ‘crunchier’ texture.

Another bonus to nitrogen ice cream is that it’s denser. Regular ice cream is about 50% air whereas nitrogen ice cream, because it freezes so fast, reduces that ratio a lot, trapping the flavors inside and, importantly, making it much more resistant to heat. Basically, your nitrogen ice cream will take ages to melt on a hot, sunny day!

Everyone likes their ice cream fresh, right? Well with nitrogen ice cream, it doesn’t get much fresher. Due to the unique way in which it is made, nitrogen ice cream has to be frozen on the spot, making everyone a made-to-order dish. You can’t get fresher than that!

Oh, and in case you were wondering: it’s completely safe too. Nitrogen is totally non-toxic, tasteless, odorless and safe for consumption, so get stuck in!

Nitrogen Ice Cream from Frostbite

If you are not yet convinced that our clever nitrogen ice cream really so much creamier and more delicious than regular ice cream, come on in and try it for yourselves. Our steampunk themed cafe is the perfect place to relax, catch up with friends and family and enjoy our awesome ice cream.

In the world of sweet treats and mega-desserts, foodies all over the world over are always on the lookout for the next big thing. Here at Frostbite, we have discovered a totally new and completely amazing way to enjoy the fantastic fun of frozen desserts.

Dragon’s breath is an awesome frozen dessert that literally lets the eater breath vapors out of their nose and mouth – making them look like, you guessed it, a fire-breathing dragon!

Unusual, uber cool and totally Instagram worthy – Dragons Breath is the next big thing in frozen fancies.

What Is Dragons Breath?

Legend has it that, according to the Glutto Digest at least, the dessert was originally invented and served at a bar by Jose Andres back in 2008. After Andres stopped serving his odd-looking sweet stuff in his Los Angeles based Bazaar restaurant, it began to spread like – dare we say it — wildfire, throughout Taiwan, Korea and the Philippines.

Made using cheese puffs or sugary cereal dipped in liquid nitrogen, the eater can enjoy cups of gloriously chilly desert balls, that will produce super cool vapors when eaten. As the condensed moisture makes its way out of your mouth, you not only get to enjoy the novelty of it, it also makes for a great way to enjoy a few laughs with friends or take awesome pictures for social media.

Remember though, Dragon’s Breath is cold! So cold in fact that we recommend you enjoy the funky frozen snack with a stick, not your fingers, and blow on it several times to let the liquid nitrogen evaporate. Diners can also buy dipping sauce, like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, to add more flavor to the dessert.

Why We Love Dragons Breath

Here at Frostbite, we love creating innovative new flavors and taste sensations. Our Dragons Breath desserts are super awesome, and our colorful cereal puffs taste a little like Fruit Loops with all that extra frozen fun. Our creamists pour liquid nitrogen all over the cereal, flash freezing it and creating a fog that spills out, making it look like a glorious bubbling cauldron. Join us to skewer those sweet and crunchy puffs and toss one into your mouth. Savor the flavor and you’ll soon be breathing out clouds of smoke, that will make you feel like a dragon for just a few seconds.

Is Dragons Breath Safe Though?

We know that this has been discussed in the media, but we’ve been serving up unusual frozen ice creams to happy customers in Florida for some time now. We ask that our diners refrain from touching the liquid nitrogen or ingest it. Thing is, all of that super cold nitrogen has evaporated by the time your dessert is ready to eat, so it should never be a problem, but just to be safe, stay clear of the nitrogen liquid that has settled at the bottom of the cup.

Unusual Frozen Desserts from Frostbite

It’s not just dragon’s breath we offer, our diners can choose from millions of freshly frozen flavor combinations, signature sundaes, alcoholic ice cream, light bulb smoothies and even our Golden Oreo ice cream sandwiches. Whatever you want – we’ve got it!

Ever felt a sudden sharp pain in your temples when you are eating ice cream? Well, you are not the only one. Brain freeze, as it is commonly known, is an actual genuine medical thing, and there is a very scientific reason behind why it happens when we eat something cold.

What Is Brain Freeze?

Brain freeze – or sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia to give it its medical name – is a rapid onset of pain in the temples, that goes away as quickly as it came. This strange moment or two of pain is usually brought on by consuming cold food or drinks. It is caused by having something cold touch the roof of the mouth and is believed to result from a nerve response causing rapid constriction and swelling of blood vessels in the temple area.

Whoah There!

Eating ice cream or enjoying an ice-cold popsicle on a hot day is incredibly refreshing and delightful, but eating your chilled delights too quickly is usually what causes brain freeze to happen. If you do feel a sudden shooting pain in your head, slow down, take a break and consume your ice cream a little more slowly in future.

What Causes Brain Freeze?

To be honest, it’s not just ice cream that can cause brain freeze, any cold stimulus can set it off. The nerve pain associated with brain freeze can also be caused by:

A sudden cooling of the capillaries of the sinuses that you feel when you step outside into very cold and icy temperatures.

A rapid rewarming of the capillaries that causes a sudden widening of the blood vessels

A change in the temperature of the sensitive nerves of the palate (hot or cold).

Those clever scientists who research important matters like the way our bodies react to rapid changes in temperature have figured out that brain freeze is very probably a defensive reaction that happens involuntarily. The brain is a very important organ and one that is also very sensitive to temperature. The sudden pain that happens when you consume something cold is your body warning you to stop.

What Is the Best Way to Get Over Brain Freeze

Most times, that quick throbbing pain passes quickly enough on its own. But, if it makes you feel really uncomfortable there are some ways to quickly regulate the effect of the cold on your blood vessels.

Try these quick fixes to get rid of brain freeze:

Drink a cup of warm water

Try pushing the tongue to the roof of your mouth, to help warm the area after consuming something cold]

Or try covering your mouth and nose with your hands and breathing rapidly to help increase the flow of warm air to the palate

If you find you are suffering from brain freeze on a regular basis, try eating ice cream and other frozen treats slowly, while taking deep breaths between bites to help regulate the temperature of the palette,

Frostbite Nitrogen Ice Cream for All

We can’t guarantee that you won’t suffer from the occasional bout of brain freeze if you eat a lot of ice cream, but we can guarantee that our flash frozen nitrogen flavors are the best in Boca Raton.

Why not visit us at our steampunk themed cafe, for delicious ice cream served up by our warm and welcoming staff today.

Many of the very best things in life have been enhanced by scientific discoveries, as luxury brands recruit white-suited scientists to help define the way we think and determine what we like to buy. From the color of our coats to the fabric on our sofa’s, there is always a lot more going on behind the scenes than you would think.

The same applies to what we eat. Processed and modified foods have all had more than just a helping hand from a scientist or two along the way. Sometimes, this may be considered a bad thing, but in the case of our creamy and delicious nitrogen ice cream, the science behind our desserts make for some of the most mouthwatering flavors you have ever tasted.

Hold on to your hats, ‘cos here comes the science bit…

The idea of using liquid nitrogen to make something edible may sound gross, but actually, it is the rapid freezing process that makes our ice cream so darn delicious.

At an ever so chilly -321, the liquid nitrogen quickly becomes a gas when it is released into the air. Pumping it into special mixers with the base ingredients for your sweet treat makes for ice cream that freezes immediately with virtually no ice crystals, making for a rich and creamy ice cream texture.

What Is Liquid Nitrogen?

Liquid nitrogen is essentially the gas nitrogen (N2), that has been cooled to such a low temperature (-196°c) that it becomes a liquid. Most of the air we breathe is nitrogen with 20% being oxygen and the remaining 2% a mixture of other gases. Liquid nitrogen is -320°F or -196°C i.e. really, really cold, and it is particularly useful for freezing foods because it is completely odorless, colorless, and tasteless.

How Can You Use It to Make Ice Cream?

The creation of top-class ice cream has evolved over the years. Nitrogen Ice Cream is the latest way to deliver freshly frozen, beautifully smooth, ice cream desserts that come in a huge variety of flavors and combinations.

By using the awesome power of the super cold liquid nitrogen, you can create amazing ice cream in a matter of minutes. The liquid nitrogen causes the fat and the water particles to stay very small, giving the ice cream an out of this world creamy consistency. When milk ice cream is made, it loses some of its density as ice crystals develop during the freezing process. The faster you are able to freeze your ingredients, the heavier they become making the finished product really, really creamy.

Desserts Made of Scarier Stuff

If you want to go beyond eating just ice cream, why not try our Dragons Breath Desserts? We infuse Japanese cereal with liquid nitrogen to produce a unique, tasty snack that will literally give you icy dragons breath, Eat, chew and blow for the ultimate in freaky, frozen fun.

Frostbite Nitrogen Ice Cream

Here at Frostbite, you can watch as our Creamists flash freeze your ice cream using liquid nitrogen. We can create over 3 billion possible combinations of flavor and toppings, served up in our warm and welcoming steampunk themed cafe.

What’s more, our nitrogen ice cream is extremely safe and is a shining example of how science can make even the best things in life taste just that little bit better.

So, if you want to tantalize your taste buds with some of the creamiest ice cream in Florida, come and create your favorite flavor with us today.
