A scoop of cold ice cream on a hot night is the ultimate delight. It’s delicious on the tongue and cools the body. For many people, the only way to eat ice cream is in a cone. Traditions vary widely and the scope of ice cream cones may surprise you.

Wafer/Cake Cones

Flat on the bottom, it eliminates the leaking problem of the truly cone shaped ice cream holder. It’s flaky, offers a softer crunch than other types, and is typically the first cone to which children are introduced. Wafer cones are neutral in flavor, making them an ideal choice for really intense ice cream flavors.

Waffle Cones

The waffle cone is often called the “fancy” version of a sugar cone. It features the signature waffle design and is highlighted by a top edge that’s uneven. They’re a little bit softer and bigger than a sugar cone and have a higher sugar content than sugar cones.

Sugar Cones

Often mistaken for a waffle cone, it has waffle marks but is slightly smaller than a waffle cone. They have a satisfying crunch, but can be brittle. Even all around the top, they’re sturdy and don’t get soggy. Most modern sugar cones have a “plug” of chocolate at the pointy end of the cone to help mitigate leaking.

Pretzel cones

A trend that comes from Philadelphia, PA, pretzel cones combine the crisp and salty crunchiness of a pretzel that blends well with ice cream flavors. The pretzel cone grew out of a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of dipping pretzels in ice cream. Created by a dentist, pretzel cones have been available since 1986.

Puffle Cones

A relative newcomer on the ice cream scene, they’re also known as Hong Kong waffles. Puffle cones are actually a common egg-based street snack cooked in a special waffle mold and folded into a cone shape. The exterior is slightly crisp and features a light, airy and chewy inside that’s pleasing to the palate. Resembling edible bubble wrap, they’re typically eaten warm as a counterpart to the coldness of the ice cream and served in a cardboard holder.

Neapolitan ice cream – that delicious blend of strawberry, vanilla and chocolate – has an international ring to the name and its true origins are still debated. Neapolitan was the moniker given to the combined ice cream flavors in honor of its supposed Italian origins.

The first known recipe for a three-flavored ice cream comes from the head chef of the Royal Prussian household in 1839. The first Neapolitan ice cream from Italy contained pistachio (green), strawberry (red) and vanilla (white) in honor of the Italian flag.

When the dessert moved to the U.S., chocolate was substituted for pistachio as it was one of the “big three” flavors most popular throughout the nation. Neapolitan was the first to combine three flavors in a single package and was introduced to U.S. ice cream fans in the 19th century.

In some areas of the world, it’s known as harlequin ice cream, more closely resembles gelato, and may combine ice cream with layers of fruit and other sweets. In 1885, specific “rules” for the cutting of Neapolitan ice cream were laid out. It was to be served thinly sliced so each person received a portion of each flavor. In other locales, it could include cake or brandy-flavored bread served between the layers of ice cream.

In the early 19th century, the sale of ice cream as a favored dessert began to decline in Europe. In an effort to bolster sales, European ice cream makers introduced spumoni to the U.S. in the 1870s and it quickly morphed into the strawberry, chocolate and vanilla that’s known today.

Frostbite Nitrogen is continuing that spirit of innovation with ice cream infused with nitrogen or alcohol, light bulb smoothies, dragon breath snacks, and billionaire-golden Oreo ice cream sandwiches. The steampunk-themed ice cream shop offers an array of toppings for over 3 billion combinations no matter what flavor is your favorite.

If you’ve ever dreamed of dining like a millionaire or an Egyptian pharaoh, Frostbite Nitrogen has just what you want. The ice cream shop’s Billionaire Golden Oreo Sandwich is dusted in edible gold and filled with custom ice cream flavors to suit any sweet tooth.

Frostbite Nitrogen is the latest innovators of the ice cream sandwich, a treat that’s been delighting kids and adults since 1899. It all began with a vendor in the Bowery of New York that placed ice cream between two milk biscuits. The ice cream sandwich transitioned to vanilla ice cream between chocolate wafers in 1945 that was sold at Forbes Field and became the ice cream sandwich that people are familiar with today.

Enter the Oreo Biscuit on March 6, 1912. The name was changed to Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie in 1974. Sold in over 100 countries, the cookie’s crème filling has included strawberry, lemon, chocolate and mint, but vanilla is the all-time favorite. The origin of the name Oreo is unknown, but it’s speculated the name is derived from the French word for gold.

Speaking of gold, the rare and noble metal was used in Egypt during the time of the pharaohs. It was added to medicinals of all kinds in medieval times. Food grade gold is safe to eat and has been used by chefs in fine dining establishments to add a dramatic effect to cuisine ranging from pastries to meat dishes, along with cocktails and desserts. At Frostbite Nitrogen, it’s a unique dessert treat.

Frostbite Nitrogen wants everyone to experience the sensation of dining like a king and the ice cream shop’s Billionaire Golden Oreo Sandwich is a tasty way to enjoy a custom ice cream flavor between two Oreo cookies and liberally dusted with one of the most highly sought noble metals in the world. It’s pure 24 karat gold magic.

Legend has it that the very first ice cream sandwich was created at the turn of the 20th century, by a pushcart vendor in the Bowery neighborhood of New York. The unknown hero of the frozen dessert world bravely went were no ice cream seller had gone before and sandwiched a slice of ice cream between two milk biscuits and sold his creation to hungry customers for just a penny. The idea soon caught on, and more vendors started selling the tasty biscuit and ice cream combo, and the ice cream sandwich was well and truly born.

Spring forward a couple of decades and the ice cream sandwich has a subtle reinvention in 1945, as a man named Jerry Newberg adds a new twist to the popular icy delight. He made his money selling slices of vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate wafers to hungry sports fans at Forbes Field, former home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. So popular was his new take on the original Bowery invention, it went on to by mass produced and became the Ice Cream Sandwich we know and love today.

Today Ice cream sandwiches can be found all around the world and are known by a variety of different names including the Monaco Bar, Giant Sandwich, Maxibon, Cream Between, Vanilla Slice and many more. However far you go to find one though, you can rest assured that the ice cream sandwich will always be considered an American icon. In fact, so much so, that it is even sold at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C!

Still one of the bestselling ice cream products on the market today, it is the 30 – 45-year age group that consumes the most ice cream sandwiches here in America. They must be eating a lot of them too, as the average number of ice cream sandwiches eaten per second nationally is a whopping 48, according to fact-finding website www.mobile-cuisine.com – and that’s a lot of sandwiches!

Upscale Ice Cream Sandwiches

As with all simple and traditional treats, there is always someone out there looking to improve on the original recipe. The ice cream sandwich is no exception, and upscale ice creameries and designer dessert chefs are using everything from banana bread to macaroons as the cookie base to sandwich ice creams made of a million different flavors to create an unusual and inspired take on the classic ice cream sandwich of our youth.

This month, we continue our love of all things ice cream by learning about the history of one of America’s best-loved beverages – the root beer float.

What is root beer, anyway?

Root beer was once also known as “small beer”. Usually made without the alcohol, this tasty beverage first became popular during colonial times and was originally made using a variety of herbs, barks and roots including coriander, juniper, ginger, burdock root, dandelion root, spikenard, vanilla beans, hops, dog grass, molasses and licorice. Interestingly enough, many of the original ingredients are still used today, and there is no one definitive recipe for making the ultimate root beer.

Although Sasparella, birch beer and ginger beer were also popular during these times, it was the humble root beer that became that bit extra, when a generous helping of ice cream was added.

When and where did the root beer float originate from?

Way back in August of 1893, one Frank J. Wisner, the owner of Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Brewing Company, was staring out of the window thinking about a new line of soda waters he was producing for the good folk of Cripple Creek to enjoy. Legend has it that the light of the full moon shone brightly upon the snow-capped Cow Mountain, turning the precocious entrepreneur’s thoughts to smooth, creamy vanilla ice cream. Suddenly hungry for the sweet taste of ice cream, he hurried back to his bar and added a scoop of vanilla to his favorite soda – Myers Avenue Red Root Beer.

He tried it, and he loved it! Knowing immediately what he had to do next, he got to work serving it to his regular customers the very next day. He named his tasty new concoction after the magnificent Black Cow Mountain, and the root beer float was born.

Over the years it came to be known as a “Black Cow” and it went on to become one of the most popular soda and ice cream combinations in America.

Something A Little Different

To make the perfect root beer float, simply pour some of that cool, refreshing root beer into a tall glass and add a scoop of vanilla on top. A word to the wise though – if you do it the other way around, you will end up with a sticky mess.

Across the country, twists on the original recipe have added a range of regional variations to this classic sweet treat. In Chicago, for example, they like to swap out regular vanilla ice cream for vanilla custard instead. In Alabama, they make one strictly for the grown-ups by adding a shot of bourbon into the mix, as well as scoops of rich and decadent bourbon ice cream.

In Washington, they give the good old root beer float a taste of Mexico by adding dulce de leche ice cream, or rich Mexican chocolate for a really refined taste. And in the Big Apple, they take things one step further, making a mouthwatering mature root beer float, using freshly brewed and fermented alcoholic beer, topped with whipped cream and a cherry.

Ice Cream Floats from Frostbite

Our nitrogen ice cream comes in a gazillion flavors (kinda) and we can add a scoop to any flavor you want. Why not come and see us today to taste the sweetest and smoothest floats in Florida.

Here at Frostbite, we love all things ice cream. That’s why we are not only interested in the millions of taste combinations we can make for you in our downtown Davie cafe, but we also like to discover more about America’s favorite old school flavors. This time around, we are looking at the magnificent malted milkshake.

What Is A Malt Shake?

Often simply referred to as a “malt”, malted milkshakes are a great retro style treat that is still enjoyed up and down the country. Made using malted milk powder that consists of malted barley, wheat flour and whole milk, these shakes have a thick consistency and a wonderful buttery flavor. To create the shake, the malted milk powder is blended with ice cream, milk and flavoring, to create the ultimate thick, creamy, delicious milkshake.

History of The Malted Milk

Here in the US, milkshakes were originally used as an alcoholic whiskey drink that had an eggnog consistency. Promoted as being a “tonic as well as a treat” they were mostly reserved for adults only.

By the turn of the century, people had started to experiment with adding sweet tasting syrups to the mixture and taking away the alcohol. Chicago drugstore chain Walgreens became famous for their malted milk when Walgreens’ employee Ivar “Pop” Coulson added ice cream to the malted milk recipe and created Horlicks Malted Milk, which became famous the world over, and a staple of Walgreens throughout the country.

By the 1950’s diners, soda fountains and drugstores were all selling malted milkshakes. They became so popular that an entire culture began to build up around them, with servers having their own special terms to refer to the way in which the milkshakes were made. The customer could have a malt that was “Burn One All the Way” (chocolate malted with chocolate ice cream), a “Twist It, Choke It, and Make It Cackle” (chocolate malted with an egg) or opt for the simple sweetness of a “White Cow” (a plain vanilla milkshake).

They became known as “frappes”, “velvets:” and just plain old “frosted malts” in various parts of the country, and the continued development of multi-mixer ice cream machines meant that these delicious drinks had cemented a permanent place in the hearts and minds of America.

Fast forward to the modern day, and malts are just as popular as always. These days we are more concerned with the amount of sugar we consume as a nation, and organic, natural, sugar-free alternatives are being made widely available. Choose from modern-day malts made with toasted pecans, vanilla beans and even rose water or vodka for a modern-day twist on an iconic favorite.

Why Do We Love Malts So?

For many of us, the idea of enjoying an icy-cold malted treat reminds us of days gone by. Served up in retro y-shaped glasses and enjoyed on chrome barstool leaning on Formica counters, the malted milk evokes a precious era where a stainless-steel milkshake machine took pride of place in every diner.

First dates can be super exciting, but don’t forget to plan your date in advance to ensure that you get those all-important first impressions just right. Too laid back and your date may think you are a bit boring, too over the top and they may think you are trying too hard.

Here in Florida, we have so many perfect places to plan your first date, you may be overwhelmed by which activities suit you best. A walk along the beach is romantic and holding hands in the park are the stuff that dreams are made of but try a little harder if you really want to impress.

Here at Frostbite Nitrogen Ice Cream, we love to watch love blossom across the tables in our very own steampunk cafe. But, because we also love our neighborhood, here are some fun and unusual ideas on how to impress on your first date this summer.

Go fruit picking

Everyone loves fruit, right? Florida is full of U-Pick farms and spending an hour or so picking up delicious goodies is a fun way to break the ice and get to know each other better. You will be busy looking for the cream of the crop, so no awkward silences, and you will have something to take away with you to enjoy later. Choose from regular fruit like strawberries, blueberries, grapes or peaches, or show your exotic side with persimmons, star fruit or avocados.

Try Ice Skating

Ice skating is an instant leveler. No matter what you do in your day to day life (unless you are a professional skater, of course), ice skating is a great way to both enter the ring on an equal footing. Staying upright is hysterical and you have no choice but to stop worrying about what you look like and lean on each other for support. Laughs are easy to come by on an ice skating date.

Book a dance lesson

Salsa and Latin dance classes are a great way to express your more passionate side in the most innocent way possible. Dancing is good for the soul and even if you think you have two left feet, a great instructor will be able to get you moving. Fun, fast paced and a great talking point, a dance lesson is a fantastic way to spend your first date together.

Go See A Movie, Outside

A trip to a movie theater is probably the most popular first date idea of all time. But, when you’re in the dark, watching the action on screen, you have very little opportunity to interact with each other. Find an outdoor screen, where you can still watch the movie, but also talk to each other at the same time. And if the date goes well, what could be more romantic than snuggling up together on a blanket, watching a movie under a starry night sky?

Go for Ice Cream

Show your date that you take your taste in ice cream seriously by introducing them to some of the creamiest, freshest and tastiest ice cream to be found anywhere in Florida. Here at Frostbite Nitrogen Ice Cream, our Nitrogen Ice Cream comes in a huge variety of flavors and can be mixed with as many toppings, sauces and sweet treats as you would like.

Our steampunk themed cafe comes complete with unique decor, friendly staff, and super tasty frozen treats, and because we love our customers too, we will be discreetly cheering you on from the sidelines too!
