Ice cream is a popular treat anytime of the year and people have gone to great lengths to improve on the frozen sweet. Innovative ways to serve ice cream began with fruit and drizzles of honey and the ways ice cream is served has continued to evolve. The curious and the adventurous may want to explore these innovative and futuristic gourmet twists.

Nitrogen-Touched

Frostbite Nitrogen is among the modern innovators to infuse ice cream with a small touch of nitrogen that flash freezes the confection and gives it a consistency that’s exceptionally smooth and creamy. An added bonus is that the ice cream shop features steampunk-themed décor.

Booze-Infused

From whiskey and rum to vodka and Irish crème, the range of alcohol-infused ice cream flavors continues to grow. The flavors are exquisite and are duplicates of popular cocktails with names like Mango Margarita, Java Chip Mojito and Cake Batter Vodka Martini. While booze-infused ice cream at Frostbite Nitrogen won’t intoxicate, it’s an ideal summer cooler for adults.

Fried Ice Cream

For those that think everything tastes better fried, there’s fried ice cream. The frozen treat is first encased in a batter or coating that can range from cinnamon-flavored cornflakes to vanilla wafers. It insulates the ice cream while the coating achieves a golden brown appearance.

Rolled Ice Cream

One of the newest sensations arriving in the market is rolled ice cream. Creating the confection is equal parts of thinly spread ice cream and performance art technique. Ice cream is combined with custom flavors and thinly spread on a cold surface. An “ice cream artist” uses a spatula to form ice cream into rolls that are placed vertically in a cup. It can be served with fruit, drizzles and toppings. It’s a variation of a tasty Thailand treat.

Try Something Different

Trendy ice cream options abound and it’s well worth taking the time to try something new. Individuals can enjoy mochi ice cream, a concept from Japan that features ice cream in a sweet rice paste that can be consumed by hand without a spoon. There are also ice cream churros or cups of uniquely flavored ice cream crafted into the shape of flowers. Whatever the flavor or the form it takes, ice cream remains the number one dessert choice.

Those of a certain age will have fond memories of malt shops and ice cream sodas. The disappearance of the corner malt shop as the premier high school hang out was also the beginning of the end for ice cream sodas, though they can still be found in an altered state that would amaze their creators.

In the era of malt shops, it was a beverage that young men could share with a date. The ice cream soda is a true classic, but as with all great ideas, its creation is surrounded by a certain amount of controversy about its origins. The International Association of Ice Cream Manufacturers attributes Robert McCay Green in 1874 Philadelphia as its creator.

An ice cream soda consists of several scoops of ice cream and a choice of flavored syrup in a tall glass, combined with unflavored carbonated water. In some areas of the U.S. and overseas, soda is used instead of carbonated water and it’s referred to as an ice cream float. The unique beverage was highly recommended by American icon, Will Rogers.

An early variation of the ice cream soda was enjoyed by China’s elite as early as 4,000 years ago, involving frozen juices, syrups, spices and honey that was left in the snow to harden to the preferred consistency. On the American scene, malt shops and soda fountains didn’t like the treat as it took longer to make and people tended to linger over them to savor the flavor instead of quickly eating and leaving.

The truly interesting fact about the ice cream soda is that it never truly died, though it has undergone a variety of incarnations and name variations, only to re-emerge as a luxury treat that would amaze its creator and those frequenting early malt shops.

The ice cream soda of today is made with everything from traditional ice cream to soft serve yogurt and mixed with soda, sparkling water, club soda, seltzer water, and even coconut milk. They’re adorned with whipped cream, colored sprinkles, nuts and candies, sugary cereal bits and cookies, along with exotic fruits. However, for purists of the ice cream soda, a cherry on top is still traditional.

Let’s be honest here, trying to pit Nitrogen Ice Cream vs Gelato is never really going to be a fair fight – they are both delicious, much loved frozen desserts that come in a wide variety of flavors.

But, that said, there are differences in the ingredients they contain, and the way that they are made that leave a tantalizingly different type of taste of your tongue.

What’s so Great About Gelato?

Gelato is an Italian ice cream that is made from cream, milk, and sugar. Unlike regular ice cream, gelato uses more milk and less cream in its base. This higher proportion of milk leads to less butterfat in the ice cream, with around only 5-8% butterfat in gelato as opposed to 10 percent or more in regular ice cream.

It’s not just the lower percentage of milk that makes Gelato taste different, it is also the way in which it is made. By being churned at a far slower rate than regular ice cream it, the mixture incorporates less air, leaving the gelato with a much denser consistency.

The silky, thick texture of gelato means it retains a softer consistency, and the lower percentage of fat means that the ingredients that provide the flavor really get the chance the shine through.

Finally, unlike regular ice cream that tastes best frozen, Gelato is usually served at temperatures between 7 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit, which adds to its super soft, creamy texture and mouthwatering flavor.

And What Makes Nitrogen Ice Cream So Different Then?

Well, in some respects nitrogen ice cream is actually quite similar to Gelato. Because our ingredients are mixed by hand, they also have a dense, creamy texture, that really allows the flavor to tickle on your taste buds. We add the usual mixture of sugar and milk and stir it all up until the sugar dissolves. We then throw in some flavor – which can literally be anything from frozen berries to cookie dough, alcohol or even cereal – then add the liquid nitrogen to flash freeze the flavor!

We allow the liquid nitrogen to work its magic for a moment or two, before stirring up the mixture to produce creamy, hand-blended ice cream that is – in our opinion – the most delicious in the world.

Nitrogen Ice Cream vs. Gelato – Who Wins?

We are more than a little bit biased to be fair, but we wholeheartedly believe that Nitrogen Ice Cream is always the best! Our creamists are on hand to create the smoothest ice cream you have ever tasted, bar none! Sorry, even the creamiest of Gelato’s will still taste a bit lumpy compared to the silky texture of our frozen desserts.

We flash freeze ice cream using liquid nitrogen at a super chilly -321 degrees, to create delicious ice cream that holds its flavor right through to the very last lick! What’s more, there is no limit on the flavor combinations you can create. We can also add alcohol for a strictly adult flavor, or create vegan, non-diary ice cream to suit your specific dietary requirements.

Frostbite – The Best Nitrogen Ice Cream Ever…

Don’t believe us, come try our ice cream today! Our friendly, relaxed steampunk themed cafe is waiting to wow you with the very best ice cream you have ever tasted! See you there real soon…

This month, we continue our love of all things ice cream by learning about the history of one of America’s best-loved beverages – the root beer float.

What is root beer, anyway?

Root beer was once also known as “small beer”. Usually made without the alcohol, this tasty beverage first became popular during colonial times and was originally made using a variety of herbs, barks and roots including coriander, juniper, ginger, burdock root, dandelion root, spikenard, vanilla beans, hops, dog grass, molasses and licorice. Interestingly enough, many of the original ingredients are still used today, and there is no one definitive recipe for making the ultimate root beer.

Although Sasparella, birch beer and ginger beer were also popular during these times, it was the humble root beer that became that bit extra, when a generous helping of ice cream was added.

When and where did the root beer float originate from?

Way back in August of 1893, one Frank J. Wisner, the owner of Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Brewing Company, was staring out of the window thinking about a new line of soda waters he was producing for the good folk of Cripple Creek to enjoy. Legend has it that the light of the full moon shone brightly upon the snow-capped Cow Mountain, turning the precocious entrepreneur’s thoughts to smooth, creamy vanilla ice cream. Suddenly hungry for the sweet taste of ice cream, he hurried back to his bar and added a scoop of vanilla to his favorite soda – Myers Avenue Red Root Beer.

He tried it, and he loved it! Knowing immediately what he had to do next, he got to work serving it to his regular customers the very next day. He named his tasty new concoction after the magnificent Black Cow Mountain, and the root beer float was born.

Over the years it came to be known as a “Black Cow” and it went on to become one of the most popular soda and ice cream combinations in America.

Something A Little Different

To make the perfect root beer float, simply pour some of that cool, refreshing root beer into a tall glass and add a scoop of vanilla on top. A word to the wise though – if you do it the other way around, you will end up with a sticky mess.

Across the country, twists on the original recipe have added a range of regional variations to this classic sweet treat. In Chicago, for example, they like to swap out regular vanilla ice cream for vanilla custard instead. In Alabama, they make one strictly for the grown-ups by adding a shot of bourbon into the mix, as well as scoops of rich and decadent bourbon ice cream.

In Washington, they give the good old root beer float a taste of Mexico by adding dulce de leche ice cream, or rich Mexican chocolate for a really refined taste. And in the Big Apple, they take things one step further, making a mouthwatering mature root beer float, using freshly brewed and fermented alcoholic beer, topped with whipped cream and a cherry.

Ice Cream Floats from Frostbite

Our nitrogen ice cream comes in a gazillion flavors (kinda) and we can add a scoop to any flavor you want. Why not come and see us today to taste the sweetest and smoothest floats in Florida.

The exact moment the sundae was invented is a hotly-contested matter, but the most popular consensus is that once upon a time in an ice cream parlor in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, an owner was asked by a customer to pour chocolate syrup over his ice cream, thus inventing the sundae.

Although there are many other towns across the country that dispute this fact and claim that the humble sundae was invented elsewhere, the only thing that really matters is that it was indeed invented at all.

Ice cream parlors were an instant hit in the early days of the United States. First appearing in Paris, France, in the 17th Century, having been brought there by Italian immigrants, it soon spread across Europe and, eventually, to the New World. Us Americans were hooked right away with the vibrant colors and fascinating flavors, as well as all the candy and sodas available, and it wasn’t very long before the ice cream parlor became a staple treat for most American families.

By the time the sundae had made its mark, ice cream was available just about anywhere including drugstores, diners and restaurants. This was thanks largely to the availability of ice cream making machines. The machines had been about since the mid-19th Century but it wasn’t until they became powered that things really took off. Now, stores could knock up their own fresh batches of ice cream as well as experiment with flavors and dishes. This boosted sales no end. After all, every town has a kid in it and every kid loves ice cream!

For over two hundred years, ice creams, and the ice cream sundae have been putting smiles on our faces both as kids and adults, and it remains to this day one of the most popular desserts ever made.

What makes the ultimate ice cream sundae?

Well, like most simple but effective dishes, the sundae has a host of variations and ways of doing things. However, throw together any combination of fresh fruit, quality ice cream, chopped nuts and, of course, chocolate syrup, all served in a long dish with whipped cream and some cherries on the top, and you can’t really go wrong.

If you’ve ever wondered why it’s called a sundae and not a Sunday, you’re not alone. As with all great things, the origins are shrouded in myth and legend. Well, maybe that’s a little bit dramatic but nobody seems to know for sure. One of the popular answers is that the contested inventor, the guy we mentioned at the start, only ever sold the dish on a Sunday. This would soon become known as ‘Ice Cream Sunday’ in households all across Two Rivers, Wisconsin, and, one assumes, the store owner picked up on that and ran with it. As for the spelling; well, that is a mystery!

In the world of sweet treats and mega-desserts, foodies all over the world over are always on the lookout for the next big thing. Here at Frostbite, we have discovered a totally new and completely amazing way to enjoy the fantastic fun of frozen desserts.

Dragon’s breath is an awesome frozen dessert that literally lets the eater breath vapors out of their nose and mouth – making them look like, you guessed it, a fire-breathing dragon!

Unusual, uber cool and totally Instagram worthy – Dragons Breath is the next big thing in frozen fancies.

What Is Dragons Breath?

Legend has it that, according to the Glutto Digest at least, the dessert was originally invented and served at a bar by Jose Andres back in 2008. After Andres stopped serving his odd-looking sweet stuff in his Los Angeles based Bazaar restaurant, it began to spread like – dare we say it — wildfire, throughout Taiwan, Korea and the Philippines.

Made using cheese puffs or sugary cereal dipped in liquid nitrogen, the eater can enjoy cups of gloriously chilly desert balls, that will produce super cool vapors when eaten. As the condensed moisture makes its way out of your mouth, you not only get to enjoy the novelty of it, it also makes for a great way to enjoy a few laughs with friends or take awesome pictures for social media.

Remember though, Dragon’s Breath is cold! So cold in fact that we recommend you enjoy the funky frozen snack with a stick, not your fingers, and blow on it several times to let the liquid nitrogen evaporate. Diners can also buy dipping sauce, like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, to add more flavor to the dessert.

Why We Love Dragons Breath

Here at Frostbite, we love creating innovative new flavors and taste sensations. Our Dragons Breath desserts are super awesome, and our colorful cereal puffs taste a little like Fruit Loops with all that extra frozen fun. Our creamists pour liquid nitrogen all over the cereal, flash freezing it and creating a fog that spills out, making it look like a glorious bubbling cauldron. Join us to skewer those sweet and crunchy puffs and toss one into your mouth. Savor the flavor and you’ll soon be breathing out clouds of smoke, that will make you feel like a dragon for just a few seconds.

Is Dragons Breath Safe Though?

We know that this has been discussed in the media, but we’ve been serving up unusual frozen ice creams to happy customers in Florida for some time now. We ask that our diners refrain from touching the liquid nitrogen or ingest it. Thing is, all of that super cold nitrogen has evaporated by the time your dessert is ready to eat, so it should never be a problem, but just to be safe, stay clear of the nitrogen liquid that has settled at the bottom of the cup.

Unusual Frozen Desserts from Frostbite

It’s not just dragon’s breath we offer, our diners can choose from millions of freshly frozen flavor combinations, signature sundaes, alcoholic ice cream, light bulb smoothies and even our Golden Oreo ice cream sandwiches. Whatever you want – we’ve got it!

Many of the very best things in life have been enhanced by scientific discoveries, as luxury brands recruit white-suited scientists to help define the way we think and determine what we like to buy. From the color of our coats to the fabric on our sofa’s, there is always a lot more going on behind the scenes than you would think.

The same applies to what we eat. Processed and modified foods have all had more than just a helping hand from a scientist or two along the way. Sometimes, this may be considered a bad thing, but in the case of our creamy and delicious nitrogen ice cream, the science behind our desserts make for some of the most mouthwatering flavors you have ever tasted.

Hold on to your hats, ‘cos here comes the science bit…

The idea of using liquid nitrogen to make something edible may sound gross, but actually, it is the rapid freezing process that makes our ice cream so darn delicious.

At an ever so chilly -321, the liquid nitrogen quickly becomes a gas when it is released into the air. Pumping it into special mixers with the base ingredients for your sweet treat makes for ice cream that freezes immediately with virtually no ice crystals, making for a rich and creamy ice cream texture.

What Is Liquid Nitrogen?

Liquid nitrogen is essentially the gas nitrogen (N2), that has been cooled to such a low temperature (-196°c) that it becomes a liquid. Most of the air we breathe is nitrogen with 20% being oxygen and the remaining 2% a mixture of other gases. Liquid nitrogen is -320°F or -196°C i.e. really, really cold, and it is particularly useful for freezing foods because it is completely odorless, colorless, and tasteless.

How Can You Use It to Make Ice Cream?

The creation of top-class ice cream has evolved over the years. Nitrogen Ice Cream is the latest way to deliver freshly frozen, beautifully smooth, ice cream desserts that come in a huge variety of flavors and combinations.

By using the awesome power of the super cold liquid nitrogen, you can create amazing ice cream in a matter of minutes. The liquid nitrogen causes the fat and the water particles to stay very small, giving the ice cream an out of this world creamy consistency. When milk ice cream is made, it loses some of its density as ice crystals develop during the freezing process. The faster you are able to freeze your ingredients, the heavier they become making the finished product really, really creamy.

Desserts Made of Scarier Stuff

If you want to go beyond eating just ice cream, why not try our Dragons Breath Desserts? We infuse Japanese cereal with liquid nitrogen to produce a unique, tasty snack that will literally give you icy dragons breath, Eat, chew and blow for the ultimate in freaky, frozen fun.

Frostbite Nitrogen Ice Cream

Here at Frostbite, you can watch as our Creamists flash freeze your ice cream using liquid nitrogen. We can create over 3 billion possible combinations of flavor and toppings, served up in our warm and welcoming steampunk themed cafe.

What’s more, our nitrogen ice cream is extremely safe and is a shining example of how science can make even the best things in life taste just that little bit better.

So, if you want to tantalize your taste buds with some of the creamiest ice cream in Florida, come and create your favorite flavor with us today.

In an argument almost as old as time itself, the debate still rages on as to whether the humble ice cream cone beats the cup, or is it the other way around?

Here at Frostbite, we just want you to savor the deliciousness of our nitrogen ice cream. To us, both the cup and the cone are vessels for your further enjoyment. But, in an effort to solve this quandary once and for all, we investigate which one wins – the cup or the cone, or is it simply just too close to call?

Let’s consider the evidence, either way:

The Cone

From the humble wafer to the most fashionable artisanal cone on the block, the ice cream cone has always added something extra to your ice cream experience. Whether you are tucking into those first delicious licks, or crunchy away on the bottom as the ice cream melts on your hand, the cone is an edible vessel that just adds to the fun and flavor.

The ice cream cone is actually a work of genius; the very shape of it directs you down through a narrowing channel of deliciousness to a point where pleasure ends. You can keep it simple with one delicious scoop of fresh vanilla or pile it high with a variety of flavors and toppings.

Of course, the biggest benefit of eating ice cream out of a cone is the fact that you get to eat it! Extra sugary loveliness that adds an extra crunchy, crispy dimension and is the perfect contrast against the rich creamy texture of the ice cream itself.

And then there is the choice! No longer are the simple wafer cones of our childhood the only way to eat, you can choose from waffle cones or sugar cones, pretzel cones and chocolate-coated cones, as well as single cones, double cones and even half size cones for those trying to be good.

Nothing quite says summer like a lazy walk along the beach, with an ice cream cone in hand. Sticky fingers from dripping deliciousness is far from an inconvenience, and rather just an additional finger licking benefit from enjoying ice cream the way it should be eaten – in a cone!

The Cup

From everything you have just read above, you probably think we have already called it and that we favor the flavor if the cone. But, the truth is, we love the cup too! After all, what the cone makes up for in taste and bite, it lacks in its physical ability to hold as much ice cream as a cup does.

With a cup, you can add multiple ice-cream flavors and ensure that there is always an equal distribution of toppings. That may sound a little scientific, but it’s true. Not only that, you can add heftier toppings than a cone could ever hold – think brownie bites, cake pops, and other gorgeous goodies, all mixed up with as many flavors as you like.

An ice cream cone will never manage to successfully hold more than 3 scoops. But with a cup you can add sauces, sprinkles and virtually any else that takes your fancy, as that cup holds strong against drips and spillages, allowing you to consume every last mouthful with your dignity still intact.

The Conclusion

Have you decided yet? We certainly haven’t, and we are happy with that. We want our customers to enjoy every last mouthful of our freshly frozen nitrogen ice cream, and we serve it scooped onto cones, flowing out of cups, sandwiched between Oreo cookies and even out of funky bulb glasses!

Taking ice cream to the next level, the hardest decision you will have to make at Frostbite is not just whether to choose a cup or a cone, but how to choose from so many amazing flavors and combinations, all freshly frozen in front of you!

First dates can be super exciting, but don’t forget to plan your date in advance to ensure that you get those all-important first impressions just right. Too laid back and your date may think you are a bit boring, too over the top and they may think you are trying too hard.

Here in Florida, we have so many perfect places to plan your first date, you may be overwhelmed by which activities suit you best. A walk along the beach is romantic and holding hands in the park are the stuff that dreams are made of but try a little harder if you really want to impress.

Here at Frostbite Nitrogen Ice Cream, we love to watch love blossom across the tables in our very own steampunk cafe. But, because we also love our neighborhood, here are some fun and unusual ideas on how to impress on your first date this summer.

Go fruit picking

Everyone loves fruit, right? Florida is full of U-Pick farms and spending an hour or so picking up delicious goodies is a fun way to break the ice and get to know each other better. You will be busy looking for the cream of the crop, so no awkward silences, and you will have something to take away with you to enjoy later. Choose from regular fruit like strawberries, blueberries, grapes or peaches, or show your exotic side with persimmons, star fruit or avocados.

Try Ice Skating

Ice skating is an instant leveler. No matter what you do in your day to day life (unless you are a professional skater, of course), ice skating is a great way to both enter the ring on an equal footing. Staying upright is hysterical and you have no choice but to stop worrying about what you look like and lean on each other for support. Laughs are easy to come by on an ice skating date.

Book a dance lesson

Salsa and Latin dance classes are a great way to express your more passionate side in the most innocent way possible. Dancing is good for the soul and even if you think you have two left feet, a great instructor will be able to get you moving. Fun, fast paced and a great talking point, a dance lesson is a fantastic way to spend your first date together.

Go See A Movie, Outside

A trip to a movie theater is probably the most popular first date idea of all time. But, when you’re in the dark, watching the action on screen, you have very little opportunity to interact with each other. Find an outdoor screen, where you can still watch the movie, but also talk to each other at the same time. And if the date goes well, what could be more romantic than snuggling up together on a blanket, watching a movie under a starry night sky?

Go for Ice Cream

Show your date that you take your taste in ice cream seriously by introducing them to some of the creamiest, freshest and tastiest ice cream to be found anywhere in Florida. Here at Frostbite Nitrogen Ice Cream, our Nitrogen Ice Cream comes in a huge variety of flavors and can be mixed with as many toppings, sauces and sweet treats as you would like.

Our steampunk themed cafe comes complete with unique decor, friendly staff, and super tasty frozen treats, and because we love our customers too, we will be discreetly cheering you on from the sidelines too!
